THE BROCKMOOR ASPIRE CURRICULUM: ASPIRATION AND OPPORTUNITY FOR EVERY CHILD

Brockmoor Primary School: A Curriculum of Ambition, Excellence and Opportunity

At Brockmoor Primary School, we believe education can change lives. Our curriculum is carefully planned to inspire and challenge every child so that they leave us as confident, knowledgeable learners, ready for secondary school and the wider world.

Our approach is shaped by the CUSP (Curriculum with Unity Schools Partnership) framework. This ensures a coherent, knowledge-rich curriculum with a strong focus on vocabulary. Each subject is taught with clarity and purpose, building depth of understanding and clear progression over time.

We set high expectations for all pupils. Our curriculum is designed to remove barriers, address gaps in knowledge and provide the cultural capital children need to succeed in modern Britain.

Our Context: Ensuring Equity Through Excellence

Brockmoor serves a community where many families face socio-economic challenges. We understand that some of our pupils may not have access to the same opportunities as others.

It is our responsibility to ensure that every child, regardless of background, has access to:

  • A knowledge-rich curriculum that supports long-term retention and deep understanding.
  • Explicit vocabulary teaching to strengthen communication and close language gaps.
  • High-quality reading experiences that foster enjoyment and confidence.
  • Enrichment opportunities that broaden horizons and raise aspirations.
  • Strong personal development education to help pupils navigate modern life safely and responsibly.

Many of our children show resilience in the face of challenge. Through our curriculum, they learn about individuals and communities who have overcome adversity and shaped the world. They explore themes such as migration and social change, gaining an understanding of how movement and diversity have influenced societies. We promote friendship, kindness and respect so that every child understands the importance of inclusion.

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that knowledge builds over time. Pupils revisit and apply what they have learned, strengthening understanding and confidence as they progress.

Early Years Foundation Stage: Strong Foundations

In the Early Years, we focus on establishing the essential building blocks for learning.

Oracy and Communication
Talk underpins learning. We develop vocabulary, listening skills and structured discussion so that children grow in confidence as communicators.

Early Reading and Phonics
We teach systematic synthetic phonics alongside regular storytelling, rhymes and songs to build fluency and enjoyment in reading.

Experiential Learning and Physical Development
Our environment encourages exploration, curiosity and movement, supporting both cognitive and physical development.

Early Mathematics
Through direct teaching and purposeful play, children develop secure number sense and early problem-solving skills.

Understanding Others and the World
Children learn about different cultures, traditions and celebrations. They begin to understand diversity, the natural world and how environments change over time.

Clear knowledge planning in the Early Years ensures children are well prepared for Key Stage 1.

A Knowledge-Rich, Ambitious Curriculum

Our curriculum is built on:

  • High academic ambition in every subject.
  • Carefully sequenced knowledge that builds cumulatively.
  • Explicit vocabulary instruction to strengthen language and thinking.
  • Regular retrieval practice to support long-term retention.

Subjects are taught clearly and systematically so that pupils develop strong subject knowledge. In history, geography, science, art and beyond, children are encouraged to think deeply, solve problems and express ideas creatively.

Pupils learn about British heritage and the people and events that have shaped the nation. They also explore technological advancement and its impact on society. Across subjects, themes of citizenship and community help pupils understand their role in the wider world.

Reading: At the Heart of Learning

Reading is central to our curriculum. We ensure that:

  • All pupils follow a structured, evidence-informed reading programme.
  • High-quality texts are embedded across subjects.
  • Comprehension skills are taught explicitly, including inference and analysis.

The books we choose broaden pupils' cultural understanding and explore themes such as resilience, migration and friendship.

Personal Development and Safeguarding

Education at Brockmoor goes beyond academic achievement. We aim to equip children with the knowledge and skills to make safe, informed choices.

Through structured personal development and PSHE, pupils learn about relationships, wellbeing, responsibility and respect. We place strong emphasis on empathy, kindness and moral understanding.

Broadening Horizons

We believe learning should extend beyond the classroom. Pupils benefit from:

  • Cultural and heritage experiences through partnerships with local and national organisations.
  • An aspirational careers programme, including visits and workshops.
  • Opportunities to explore both local history and global issues.
  • Access to technology to support digital learning for all pupils.

These experiences enrich the curriculum and raise aspirations.

The Impact of Our Curriculum

By the time pupils leave Brockmoor Primary School, they are:

  • Academically secure and prepared for secondary education.
  • Fluent and confident readers.
  • Clear and thoughtful communicators.
  • Responsible, respectful members of their community.
  • Equipped with the knowledge and confidence to shape their future.

Our curriculum is rigorous, purposeful and meaningful. It is designed not simply to prepare children for the next stage of education, but to help them grow into capable, informed and confident young people.
